Mark Carney, the frontrunner to become Canada's next Prime Minister, commented on the tariffs imposed by Donald Trump on his country at a rate of 25%.

Mark Carney stated that his country "will stand up to Trump."

In an exclusive interview with BBC Newsnight, the 59-year-old Carney said that Canada would impose "the same value" in response to the U.S. tariffs.

In addition to imposing a 25% tariff on Canadian imports today, the White House also announced a 25% tariff on Mexico and 10% on China.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff on Canadian imports, which sparked strong reactions from Canadian officials.

In an exclusive interview with BBC Newsnight, Mark Carney, the leading candidate to succeed Justin Trudeau as the leader of the Liberal Party and Prime Minister, stated that Canada would take similar actions in response to these tariffs. Carney said, "President Trump likely believes that Canada will back down… but we will stand up to Trump, and we will not retreat. We are united, and we will respond in kind."

Additionally, Canada threatened to take further retaliatory actions, including cutting off electricity exports to the United States. Carney pointed out that Canada has many cards to play in response, including the electricity it sells to the U.S. He added that negotiations with the United States would be "very difficult."

These developments come at a time when the White House announced a 25% tariff on Mexico and 10% on China. These moves have raised concerns about escalating global trade tensions and their impact on the Canadian economy.

Notably, the 59-year-old Mark Carney previously served as the Governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, and announced in January his candidacy for the leadership of Canada's ruling Liberal Party. He has so far received significant support from Liberal Party MPs in the leadership race that ends on March 9.

In a related context, Kristia Freeland, another candidate for the Liberal Party leadership, proposed creating a "retaliatory list" to counter potential tariffs that Trump may impose. This list targets key American industries, like Florida orange farmers and Wisconsin dairy farmers, to highlight the potential economic repercussions.

These developments indicate a rise in tensions between Canada and the United States, with Canada ready to take strong steps to protect its economic interests in the face of American trade policies.
