Many flights to and from Toronto Pearson Airport in Mississauga were delayed this afternoon due to strong winds hitting the airport and other parts of Mississauga and the Greater Toronto Area ("GTA").
While Pearson officials have not confirmed that the strong winds are responsible for the delays in arrivals and departures, they posted on social media this afternoon saying they expect potentially disruptive winds.
Temperatures are dropping rapidly at Toronto Pearson and will continue to fall below freezing by evening, according to airport officials in a post on X.
They added: “We are witnessing strong winds reaching speeds of up to 60 km/h, with expected gusts up to 74 km/h later today.”
One of the commenters on this post mentioned noticing many delays from Porter Airlines, Air Canada, and WestJet.
While many airlines are experiencing delays entering and leaving Pearson, the airport's online flight status site shows that most affected flights belong to Air Canada. However, this is not unusual as Canada’s main airline, “Air Canada,” operates more flights at the country's largest and busiest airport than any other airline.
Other destinations affected by departure delays include Halifax, Ottawa, Kelowna, and Edmonton within Canada, alongside several international destinations in the United States, Mexico, and Europe.
Among the incoming flights expected to arrive late at Pearson are those from Montreal, Sudbury, Calgary, the United States, the Philippines, Mexico, and Seoul.
As always, Pearson officials urge travelers to check their flight status in advance.
