Manitoba is preparing to receive a flow of Afghan refugees. CTV News Winnipeg has learned that a charter flight carrying 350 government-assisted refugees is scheduled to arrive in Winnipeg next week.
A regional spokesperson confirmed that the charter is part of the Canadian government’s commitment to resettle 40,000 Afghans in Canada after the Taliban took power a year ago. So far, 17,375 Afghans have arrived in the country.
Among these individuals, figures from the federal government show that 320 Afghan refugees have been resettled in Manitoba, including 275 in Winnipeg and 45 in Brandon, Man.
The province said that resettlement support for newly arrived government-assisted refugees will be provided by service provider organizations funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) under the Resettlement Assistance Program.
IRCC was not immediately able to respond to a request for comment on the arrival of refugees.
