About twenty prominent figures from the Lebanese community in the city of Montreal in the province of Quebec signed a letter demanding the Canadian government "more effective intervention in the issue of the return of Syrian displaced persons in Lebanon to their country."

It was sent to both Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Minister of International Development Harjit Sajjan, and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly.

The Canadian government minister Harjit Sajjan visited Lebanon on August 17th last year as part of an inspection tour of the situation of Syrian refugees there.

He warned at the time that Syria is not yet safe enough for millions of its refugee children outside its borders to start returning to it.

His statements came days after the Lebanese authorities announced a plan to return the Syrians to their country torn by war since 2011.

After that, on August 28th last year, a prominent group of Lebanese community members in Montreal drafted their letter addressed to the Canadian officials in the federal capital.

In this report, lawyer Joseph Dora, one of the signatories contributing to the drafting of the letter, reviews the main points mentioned in it, which appeal to the Canadian government for effective intervention "because the file of displaced Syrians in Lebanon is taking a worrying turn and warns of danger to the Lebanese society," as stated in the text of the letter.

We also look at the opinion of the Canadian-Syrian political activist opposing Bashar al-Assad's regime, Imad al-Zawahra.

Canadian Minister Harjit Sajjan had repeated those concerns during his recent visit to Beirut, saying "it is very important to ensure the existence of a completely safe environment to which they can return."

For its part, Lebanon appeals to the international community to help it return the Syrian displaced persons to their country "safely and with dignity," and this file has been assigned to a special ministerial committee in Beirut.
