The Manitoba leaders' council criticized the federal government for cutting funding allocated for the inspection of former residential school lands, stating that they feel extremely disappointed and angry.

Previously, communities could receive up to 3 million dollars through the Missing Children Community Support Fund for residential schools, but funding will now be capped at 500,000 dollars.

Senior Vice President Betsy Kennedy stated that the decision to cut funding is not only frustrating but also a disrespect to the survivors and families affected by the system.

Meanwhile, Ottawa claims that the funding adjustment was made in order to follow a "sustainable approach" that provides funding for as many community-led projects as possible.

In a statement, Crown-Indigenous Relations says that the funding adjustments will not apply to previously signed agreements, highlighting the 216 million dollars that has been provided through the community support fund since 2021.

Kennedy noted that the decision to cut funding without discussions with First Nations leadership is a "missed opportunity" for Canada to strengthen relationships and respect the rights of Indigenous peoples.
