Premier Heather Stevenson announced on Wednesday that the province will spend $87 million on residents of the province to tackle the current inflation.

Stevenson said, "It is clear that many Manitoba residents are hurting and struggling to cover their expenses."

As part of the package, families with children and a household income of less than $175,000 in 2021 will receive a dedicated check of $250 for the first child and $200 for each additional child.

The province estimates that 145,000 families with nearly 282,000 children will benefit from the checks.

Seniors with an income of less than $40,000 who claimed an education property tax credit in 2021 will receive a benefit check of $300.

Stevenson also announced that those receiving employment and income assistance will get an increase.

General assistance clients with no dependent children will receive an additional $50 per adult each month, and all environmental assessment clients will receive an additional $25 per family each month.

Checks will be mailed in late September. Manitoba’s announcement comes a week after Saskatchewan announced $500 checks for all residents aged 18 and over to deal with inflation.
