A man fell and died after a hot air balloon fell today, Monday, while passing over the suburbs of Melbourne, Australia’s second-largest city.
The hot air balloon took off from the northern suburbs of Melbourne early in the morning and remained in the air for about 30 minutes before the man fell from the basket.
His body was found in a residential area that was closed off to traffic by Victoria state police, while the balloon landed safely several miles from where the man’s body was found.
The police said they would prepare a report for the coroner, and the death is not being treated as suspicious. Police are also speaking with the balloon pilot, other passengers, and witnesses.
The National Commercial Balloon Industry and the Australian Ballooning Association expressed their condolences to the man’s family and friends.
Their written statement said: "Hot air balloon baskets are designed with safety in mind, specifically to prevent passengers from accidentally falling or any accidental exit." "Passengers and the pilot have been psychologically shocked by this tragedy, so psychological support and counseling have been arranged for all those affected."
