The British authorities announced, on the evening of Tuesday, July 19, 2022, a state of maximum alert in the capital, London, to confront the fires, while the country recorded the highest temperature in its history, amid concerns about worsening the global climate crisis.
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, described the situation caused by the fires as "critical," calling on people to stay safe, noting that firefighters are working under great pressure.
According to the British "Sky News" network, hundreds of firefighters have moved to control at least ten fires around London.
In one of the towns located east of London, several houses were destroyed, while others were severely damaged due to the fires.
Photos taken from above showed thick, black smoke clouds over towns adjacent to London, while no reports of human casualties have been received yet.
