The weather system is disturbed  throughout the region, with a risk of heavy rain and thunderstorms after one day of parts of Barrie receiving the equivalent of a month's rain over just a few hours Sunday night.

Gerald Cheng, a meteorologist at the Canadian Ministry of Environment, told CTV News that heavy rain flooded roads with 60 to 90 mm in low-lying areas on Sunday.

He pointed out that a typical August would see 89 mm. Cheng added, "It was a slow-moving thunderstorm, meaning rain fell on the same area for a longer period." "This disturbance makes me nervous."

Police in the area closed both the northbound lane and the slopes leading to Highway 400 while water flowed across the asphalt.

In an email to CTV News, the Ministry of Transportation said a contractor working on a bridge replacement project is cleaning the construction site after the storm.

"The heavy rainfall caused ditch flooding, causing some of the northbound Highway 400 slope to wash away with material deposited on the same road and Fairview Street.

The contractor hurriedly made repairs and cleaned the areas yesterday so that roads could be safely reopened to traffic."

According to Cheng, by Tuesday noon, the thunderstorms will dissipate, to be replaced by another system exposed to thunderstorms on Thursday and Friday. He concluded by saying, "Saturday and Sunday look good."
