Oshawa, Ontario - A judge today sentenced a man who attacked and killed a mother and two of her children east of Toronto to life imprisonment with no chance of parole for 25 years.

One of the judges described Corey Finn's actions as "horrific" when he issued the sentence at the Oshawa, Ontario court on Tuesday.

Finn was convicted of three counts of second-degree murder in 2018 for the death of his girlfriend Krasimira Begsinofski and her children Roy, 14, and Vinelia, 13, in Ajax, Ontario.

Judge Howard Leibowitz said in court: "Mr. Finn's actions destroyed the family and caused significant harm to the community."

Second-degree murder is punishable by a mandatory life sentence with a minimum of 10 years before being eligible for parole.

The judge imposed parole ineligibility periods for the murders of Begsinofski and Roy at the same time.

He reserved the sentence for the Vinelia murder until the Supreme Court of Canada rules on the constitutionality of imposing parole ineligibility periods for multiple murders.

Judge Leibowitz said Vinelia's murder was a separate act and occurred five hours after her mother and brother were killed.

"In my opinion, having regard to the nature and circumstances of the crimes and Mr. Finn's character, a consecutive period of parole ineligibility must be imposed for the brutal and cruel daughter's murder."

The Crown had sought a sentence of 72 years before Finn applies for parole, while Finn indicated that 10 years would be "ideal."

Finn lived in the basement of Begsinofski's house, and the two had an on-again, off-again relationship again described by the judge as "toxic."

On March 14, 2018, Finn and Begsinofski were in her apartment and the court learned that they were using cocaine that night.

Begsinofski left the house later, and Finn found her in the garage, struck her, and tried to strangle her, the court heard. When that failed, Finn went to the kitchen, took a knife, and returned "to finish the job," according to the judge.

Finn angrily went on to attack Roy, who was sleeping in his mother's bed, struck the boy, then strangled him.

Finn attacked the daughter five hours later when the girl went to check on her mother. The court heard that he struck the girl and then repeatedly stabbed her with a butter knife.

The court heard that Finn fled before the police arrived, but officers eventually tracked him down in a shed elsewhere.

Finn told police after his arrest that he was in a cocaine-induced psychosis at the time.

On Tuesday, the judge said he would wait until the Supreme Court issues a decision on the constitutionality of consecutive parole eligibility periods. Leibowitz said he would impose a consecutive sentence for the killing of his daughter Vinelia if the law is upheld.
