A federal Liberal deputy, from the Jewish sect, believes that it is in the interest of the Middle East and the world for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to step down from his position.

Ben Carr, who represents one of Winnipeg’s constituencies in the House of Commons under the banner of the ruling Liberal Party, said he has great concerns about the Israeli government and hopes that its head will "depart" "soon." Winnipeg is the capital of the province of Manitoba in west-central Canada.

Carr added that he does not support politicians at the far right of the spectrum in Israel who display maps of the Gaza Strip with Israeli flags.

Carr was referring to a conference held last weekend in Jerusalem during which members of the far right in Israel called for the rebuilding of Jewish settlements in the Gaza Strip about twenty years after Israel dismantled them.

One of these deputies is Itamar Ben-Gvir, the Israeli National Security Minister, who announced that the time has come to encourage the migration of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, a matter that the Canadian government has always strongly opposed.

Carr said that governments change and that Israel remains an ally that plays an important role in security in the region.

"It is very, very important to remember that governments come and go, and that our relationships with countries are deeper than those we can have with the government currently in power," Carr emphasized today.

Since the outbreak of the current war between Israel about four months ago, members of the Canadian Liberal Party led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, including Carr, have openly expressed their opinions regarding Ottawa's policy, opinions that were not always consistent with the official government position.

Carr said in this regard that the Canadian Liberal Party is a "microcosm of Canadian society," and that among its deputies there are different views regarding the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

"It makes sense for these conversations to take place and I do not think they are a source of negativity or division," Carr added.

It is mentioned that the current war between Israel and the Hamas movement controlling the Gaza Strip began on October 7, 2023, with an attack launched by the Palestinian Islamist movement on southern Israel that resulted in the killing of about 1,200 people, most of them civilians, according to Israeli authorities. The attackers kidnapped about 250 other people and took them as hostages to the Gaza Strip. 105 hostages were released in a prisoner exchange operation between Israel and Hamas in late November.

In response to the October 7 attack, Israel promised to "eliminate" Hamas, besieged the Gaza Strip completely, heavily bombarded it as rarely seen, and launched a large-scale ground military operation on October 27, which has so far resulted in the death of 26,900 people there, the majority of them women, children, and people under 18, according to the Ministry of Health in the Hamas government, besides about 63,000 wounded.

The population of the Palestinian Gaza Strip, numbering about 2.4 million people, of whom about 1.9 million have been forced to flee their homes, still face a catastrophic humanitarian situation, according to the United Nations organization.
