The Canadian Armed Forces will assist P.E.I. in cleanup efforts as the impact of Storm Fiona continues to be assessed on the island. Premier Dennis King said at a press briefing on Sunday afternoon that 100 military personnel will arrive on the island this evening to help with recovery efforts in the province after the federal government approved a request for assistance sent on Saturday. The military is expected to be on the ground to assist provincial crews by Monday morning.
Fiona struck Prince Edward Island in the early hours of Saturday morning, with heavy rain and winds exceeding 170 km/h, with reports of widespread property damage but no serious injuries to people. King said Ministry of Transportation crews and contractors have been assessing the damage. The road infrastructure appears to be in better condition than initially expected, but there are "large pockets" of severe damage. He also said six roads are completely closed and many bridges are impassable, at least six schools have suffered significant damage, and the Ministry of Education is reviewing emergency plans.
In the same context, Minister of Justice and Public Safety Darlene Compton said: "Thank you for taking this seriously, thank you for caring for each other." Some roads in Charlottetown were closed on Sunday to allow crews to clear fallen trees from Storm Fiona.
Also, Tanya Mullally from the provincial Emergency Measures Organization said there has been one death since the briefing on Saturday but the cause is unknown. Tanya urged island residents who have portable generators to use them outside to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning, saying: "We cannot urge enough individuals, we understand you need to run your generator, but we just urge you to use it safely so that we can make sure no more injuries or deaths occur. Our road to recovery will take weeks or more."
When asked earlier today about the expected time to restore power to residents, Griffin said she simply does not know—and warned that it could take another 48 hours. Officials are also urging residents to stay off the roads and shelter in their homes.
