The Hebrew Channel 13 reported on Wednesday that the Israeli Prison Service has transferred the prominent Fatah movement leader prisoner Marwan Barghouti to solitary confinement.

The Hebrew channel stated that the prison administration "took measures against Barghouti, claiming he is pushing for an escalation of resistance in the West Bank."

It explained that Barghouti was "transferred from Ofer Prison to solitary confinement in another prison," which it did not mention, after "receiving information that Barghouti is pushing for an escalation of resistance actions against the occupation in the West Bank."

The Israeli authorities claimed that "Barghouti is working through several channels to ignite a third intifada in the West Bank, due to the ongoing Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip."

Prisoner Marwan Barghouti is a politician and prominent leader in the Fatah movement; he participated in the first intifada in 1987, was one of the most prominent figures of the second intifada in 2000, was arrested multiple times, survived several failed Israeli assassination attempts, and was sentenced to five life imprisonments.

Hamas insists that any prisoner exchange deal to release abductees must include Marwan Barghouti's name because of the political gains that would be achieved by that, while Israel considers his release a red line, announcing that it transferred Barghouti from Ofer Prison to solitary confinement based on intelligence information indicating he is working through several channels to incite the population in the West Bank to spark a third intifada.

Barghouti is described as the man of Palestinian consensus who holds political weight capable of stirring the stagnant Palestinian scene since the division occurred and reshaping its balances.

He is also seen as capable of changing the face of the Palestinian Authority and gaining popular acceptance if it returns to supervise the Gaza Strip post-war, thus ending the debate over the future of the Palestinian Authority without internal conflicts occurring.

Sixty-four-year-old Marwan Barghouti is the architect of the second intifada and has been a prisoner for 20 years, with several sentences including life imprisonment issued against him.

Israel has repeatedly rejected including his name in any exchange deal with the Palestinian side.

It is noteworthy that according to estimates by the Israeli human rights organization "Hamoked," the number of "security prisoners" currently held by Israel is about 9,000 security prisoners, whom Hamas demands to be released all together.
