Baghdad demanded today, Thursday, that the Swedish ambassador Jessica Svärdström leave Iraqi territory in response to the repeated burning of the Quran.

The Iraqi Communications and Media Commission also announced the suspension of the operating license of the Swedish telecommunications company "Ericsson" in Iraq.

The head of the commission, Ali Al-Moaidi, stated in a brief statement that the operating license of the Swedish telecommunications company Ericsson has been suspended in Iraqi territory due to its home country's allowance for the burning of the Holy Quran and the Iraqi flag.

Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shiyaa al-Sudani directed the withdrawal of the Iraqi chargé d'affaires from the Iraqi embassy in Sweden, and also threatened to sever relations with it, due to her statement regarding a demonstration in which a copy of the Quran and the Iraqi flag would be burned.

Reuters confirmed that hundreds of protesters stormed the Swedish embassy in Baghdad in the early hours of Thursday morning and set it on fire.

No injuries to embassy staff have been reported, and Swedish embassy officials in Baghdad have not yet responded to requests for comment.

Supporters of cleric Muqtada al-Sadr called for this protest ahead of another expected burning of a copy of the Quran in Sweden, as the Swedish government had approved a demonstration in front of the Iraqi embassy in Sweden today, where organizers intend to burn another copy of the Holy Quran. The previous burning of the Quran led to widespread protests and condemnations in Muslim countries.

For its part, the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned in the strongest terms the incident of setting fire to the Swedish embassy in Baghdad and the storming of the embassy by hundreds of protesters.

The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a post on its Twitter account, "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemns the incident of the burning of the Embassy of the Kingdom of Sweden in Baghdad. This act occurs within the context of attacks on diplomatic missions and threats to their security."

Sweden also condemned the storming of its embassy in Baghdad, holding the Iraqi authorities responsible for protecting diplomatic missions.

The Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a statement, "We condemn all attacks on diplomats and employees of international organizations," adding that the Iraqi authorities bear the responsibility of protecting diplomatic missions and their staff, assuring that the staff of the Swedish embassy in Baghdad is safe.
