Today, Tuesday, the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, laid the foundation stone for the expansion project of the largest gas field in the world, the North Gas Field in Qatar. Qatari media covered this event today, which is expected to contribute to increasing liquefied natural gas production in Qatar.

Beginning of the expansion of the largest gas field in the world - the Qatari North Gas Field

In the presence of the Emir of Qatar, the first steps for the expansion of the North Gas Field, located in the waters of the Arabian Gulf and covering an area of 6,000 square meters within Qatari territorial waters, began today. The expansion project in the east and south of the field aims to meet the growing energy demand in the global market by enhancing the annual production of liquefied natural gas.

The field's production is expected to reach approximately 126 million tons annually by 2027, representing a 63% increase from the current production level.

The largest field in the world expands eastward and southward

In a related context, the North Gas Field is the largest gas field in the world, containing nearly 51 trillion cubic meters of gas and 7.9 billion cubic meters of gas condensates. The extraction of gas and the expansion of the project are overseen by QatarEnergy in partnership with a number of global partners, namely:

– Total and ConocoPhillips from the United States

– Italian Eni

– Shell and Sinopec from China

Eni, Shell, and Sinopec will participate in the expansion of the northeastern field, while Total, Shell, and ConocoPhillips will take part in the expansion of the southern field. Partnership contracts for both expansions have been signed with "QatarEnergy," with a total project cost of approximately 28.75 billion US dollars.

Enhancing Qatar's global position with the largest gas field in the world

During the foundation-laying ceremony, the Qatari Emir made several statements to the media, affirming that "the laying of the foundation stone for the North field expansion project falls within Qatar's strategy to support its global position as a producer of liquefied natural gas, and solidifies its leading role in meeting the global energy market's needs."

In a related context, Sheikh Tamim concluded his statements to the media by wishing success and leadership to QatarEnergy and its partners in this global project.

The Qatari Emir's statements were published by the "Qatari Al Raya" newspaper on its official X (formerly Twitter) site along with snapshots of the expansion commencement ceremony.

Information about the North Gas Field

The field is considered the largest gas field in the world and is adjacent to the Iranian gas field "South Pars" on the maritime boundaries between Qatar and Iran in the Arabian Gulf. The field was discovered in 1971 and is regarded as one of the largest global sources of gas, covering a very high percentage of global gas needs. Its expansion will enhance its status as the world's largest gas extraction field, in addition to strengthening Qatar's presence in this global economic sector.
