A Nigerian security official announced the death of at least 37 people, including two women who burned to death after an explosion at an illegal oil refinery in the south of the country today, Tuesday, October 3, 2023.
Unlicensed refining is common in Nigeria's oil-rich Niger Delta region, where "poor residents" tap into pipelines to produce fuel for sale to make a profit.
This practice, which can be as simple as boiling crude oil in barrels to extract fuel, often leads to casualties.
Rufus Wikeim, the security chief in the area, also stated that the recent incident occurred in the early hours of yesterday, Monday, in the Iba region of Rivers State.
