The government of India issued a warning to Indian citizens and students living in Canada regarding an increase in "hate crimes, sectarian violence, and anti-India activities" in the country, urging their citizens to exercise caution.
The Ministry of External Affairs of India said, in a statement published on Friday, that officials "addressed these incidents" with Canadian authorities and requested investigations into the "aforementioned crimes." The statement also claimed that hate crimes against Indian citizens have increased in Canada.
The statement said: "The perpetrators of these crimes have not been brought to justice yet in Canada." The notice does not specify any particular crimes or provide further information about the Indian government's claims.
The ministry also recommends that Indian citizens and students in Canada register with the High Commission of India in Ottawa or the Consulate General of India in Toronto or Vancouver for better communication with officials in case of emergencies.
