Fines imposed on a long list of parking violations in Toronto will increase starting Thursday.
The City of Toronto issued a press release on Monday, stating that it will raise parking fines for 123 offenses to help "reduce illegal parking and stopping."
The city said: "Increasing fines can help reduce congestion by deterring drivers from parking and stopping in high-traffic areas, and encourage people to consider other modes of transportation such as walking, biking, or public transit to promote smoother traffic flow."
The city noted that changes include increasing the fine for parking without payment at a parking meter from $30 to $50, increasing the fine for parking in a prohibited area on a bike lane from $60 to $200, and the fine for non-electric vehicles or electric vehicles parked and not actively charging at an electric charging station will be $75.
The Toronto City Council approved the fines in April after a review by city staff.
In its press release, the city reminded residents that it does not report parking violations or penalties of any kind via text messages.
The city added: "We urge residents to treat such messages as fraudulent."
