Many people were evacuated from a hotel in the eastern part of the city on Saturday, August 27, after dangerous levels of chlorine were found in the hotel's swimming pool area in Ottawa.
According to a tweet from Ottawa Fire Services (OFS), a chemical mixture in the mechanical room of the pool caused fumes to enter the pool area, emitting toxic and dangerous odors that caused reactions in several individuals at the scene.
At exactly 9:33 AM, the HazMat team intervened and entered the hotel located on Brisebois Crescent off Centrum Boulevard, where the team's technicians detected dangerous levels of chlorine in the pool area, forcing firefighters to use high-powered fans to ventilate the hotel.
Paramedics in Ottawa told CityNews that six people had moderate reactions to the chemicals, and two people were transported to the hospital in stable condition.
