The minimum wage varies depending on the province and territory in Canada, but it currently ranges from $13 in Saskatchewan to $16.77 in Yukon.

Many places have announced increases in worker wages in the coming months, including Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and British Columbia.

Additionally, federally regulated private sector employees received a $1 wage increase on April 1, and the Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) said this increase will keep pace with inflation, which rose by 6.8% in 2022.

To compare with other countries around the world, here is the minimum wage that workers earn in other countries from lowest to highest:

Bangladesh:

The minimum wage is CAD 19.48 per month (1500 Bangladeshi Taka).

Philippines:

Similar to Canada, the minimum wage in the Philippines varies by region, with the highest rate around CAD 13.76 (570 Philippine Peso) daily in Metro Manila, and the lowest around CAD 8.23 (341 Philippine Peso) daily in the Bangsamoro region in the south, and workers across the country are fighting to raise this minimum wage this year amid inflation.

Portugal:

The minimum wage in this Southern European country is about CAD 1116.96 (760 Euros) per month, equivalent to CAD 6.97 per hour, where low wages affect citizens' ability to afford housing.

South Korea:

South Korea raised the minimum wage to 9620 won per hour (about CAD 7.37) in January.

Workers in the country went on strike last year to fight for a higher minimum wage.

United States:

Similar to Canada, the minimum wage in the United States varies by state, ranging from USD 7.25 (CAD 9.69) in places like Alabama to USD 15.50 (CAD 20.72) in California.

In April, the federal minimum wage rose to USD 16.65 (CAD 22.26) per hour.

United Kingdom:

The United Kingdom classifies the minimum wage based on age.

As of April, the national living wage for workers aged 23 or older is £10.42 (CAD 17.29).

The minimum wage for those under 18 is £5.28 (CAD 8.76).

Australia:

Australia is considered to have one of the highest minimum wages in the world, with minimum wage workers earning AUD 21.38 (CAD 19.17) per hour.

Luxembourg:

This small European country located between France, Belgium, and Germany offers the highest minimum wage in the world.

Workers earn about 2936.48 Euros (CAD 4316.94) minimum per month, or CAD 26.92 per hour.
