The federal government has set a price on the amount it wants to see companies like Google and Facebook spend under a law requiring tech giants to compensate media for news articles.

Federal officials estimate that Google will need to pay $172 million and Facebook $62 million in compensation to meet the standards they propose using to grant exemptions under the Online News Act.

The standards listed as part of a draft set of regulations will allow compensations provided by tech giants to be both cash and non-cash, while the guidelines do not define the non-cash contributions that will be counted, and officials say that training and advertising may end up meeting the standards.

The draft regulations that determine the implementation of the law are subject to public consultation; however, in anticipation of the regulations, Meta has already stripped Canadian news from its platforms on Facebook and Instagram, while Google, which issued similar threats, has not acted yet.
