The Canada Border Services Agency is improving surrounding fences, gate controls, and road infrastructure at 11 border crossings between the United States and Canada in the wake of the "Freedom Convoy" protests that besieged many crossings last year.
Protesters closed entry points to Canada last year in opposition to public health restrictions related to COVID-19 in solidarity with a massive protest that occupied downtown Ottawa for three weeks.
The Canadian Transportation Agency estimated that up to $3.9 billion in business activity was disrupted due to the blockade, which was one of the factors in the Prime Minister's decision to invoke the Emergencies Act.
Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc said on Thursday that improvements at the border were one of the ways the government was responding to recommendations from the federal inquiry into the use of the act.
The Canada Border Services Agency stated that other security measures installed at the border crossings include speed bumps, upgraded closed-circuit television systems, building access control tools, and improved lighting.
Additionally, the agency added that it would seek more ways to enhance the safety and security of Canadian border crossings.
