Cameron and Rwanda took proactive steps by reshaping military positions, just hours after the military coup in Gabon, which saw soldiers ousting President Ali Bongo, whose family has ruled the oil-rich nation for over 5 decades.

Observers and experts on African affairs believe that the swift decisions of Cameroon and Rwanda aim to avoid the "contagion of military coups" currently sweeping across the African continent, especially since the presidents of both countries have been in power for long decades, thereby safeguarding against any future thoughts of repeating the experience in their countries.

Furthermore, Cameroon’s President Paul Biya made significant changes within the Ministry of Defense, appointing new heads of departments, including the military forces, air force, navy, and the General Inspectorate of the Gendarmerie.

In the same vein, shortly after the Gabon coup, the Rwandan Defense Forces stated on "X" that President Paul Kagame authorized the retirement of 83 senior officers, including James Kabarebe, the senior presidential advisor on security issues.

Kagame's decisions included the retirement of 6 officers in mid-level positions, and 86 senior non-commissioned officers, along with the discharge of 160 military personnel on medical grounds, while promoting and appointing other officers to replace those whose terms had expired.

The sudden retirement of military personnel in Cameroon and Rwanda has not been explained, but experts believe it is an attempt to stop the current wave of military coups sweeping the African continent.
