Wildfires in EU countries have intensified during the recent period, resulting in the deaths of dozens of citizens and causing a state of fear and panic among the populace.
A spokesperson for the European Commission stated that Greece is experiencing "the largest wildfire ever recorded in the European Union." Hundreds of firefighters, supported by aircraft from the European fleet, are struggling to contain the raging flames. The EU's Copernicus Climate Change Service reported on Tuesday that the fire that broke out in northeastern Greece 11 days ago has spread over an area exceeding 800 square kilometers. According to a preliminary toll, at least 20 people were killed in the fire last week, believed to mostly be migrants.

The EU's Copernicus Climate Change Service announced that a wildfire that broke out in northeastern Greece 11 days ago has so far burned an area larger than that of New York City. The fire, exacerbated by strong winds and hot weather, has resulted in the deaths of at least 20 people last week. The Copernicus Service described the fire as the largest ever to occur in Europe in years.

A spokesperson for the European Commission mentioned that member states of the bloc are currently mobilizing about half of their joint air fleet to combat the fire.

Eleven aircraft and helicopters from the European fleet were sent to assist Greece in fighting the raging fires in the Dadia National Park north of the city of Alexandroupoli, along with 407 firefighters, as announced by Balaz Oivary.

The Greek fire department told AFP that "the fire is still out of control" in the sanctuary, which is a refuge for rare species of birds of prey. Greece has experienced numerous fires this summer, which the government attributed to climate change.

The European Union has a fleet comprising 24 aircraft and four helicopters provided by member states to combat fires in the EU and neighboring countries.

Europeans are working on establishing an independent air wing funded by the EU consisting of 12 aircraft, which will be ready to operate at full capacity by 2030.

The fire, which started near the city of Alexandroupolis, has become the deadliest wildfire in Europe this summer.
