Google announced yesterday, Friday, that it has allocated the promised amount of $100 million by the tech giant to Canadian news companies.

The Canadian Journalism Foundation will be responsible for ensuring that eligible news organizations receive their share of the money.

The steering committee consists of 12 independent media outlets representing French language, community news, and Indigenous peoples, as well as publications specifically representing Black Canadians and minorities.

Some of the organizations include Pivot, The Reresolve, IndigiNews, Village Media, and the Canadian Community Television Association.

Google has agreed to pay $100 million to Canadian news publishers annually, indexed for inflation, in exchange for being exempt from the Online News Act, which forces tech companies to enter into agreements with news publishers.

It is unclear when eligible news organizations will receive the funds. However, payment is contingent on Google officially obtaining an exemption from the federal broadcasting regulator.

Earlier this year, Google launched an open call for news organizations wishing to receive compensation under the Online News Act, with approximately 1,500 outlets applying for the funds.

The group will review all news publishers that responded to the open call and distribute funds to publishers that meet the criteria.

Funds will be distributed proportionally based on the number of full-time journalists employed by the companies.

To qualify, news companies must have at least two full-time employees and meet other criteria under the Online News Act.

According to a Canadian Heritage official, small print and digital outlets can expect to receive about $17,000 for each journalist they employ.

The Liberal government had previously set a cap on the amount of money that the CBC and other broadcasting organizations can receive.

CBC/Radio-Canada will not receive more than $7 million from the annual fund, with a maximum of $30 million reserved for other broadcasting organizations.
