Toronto Pearson International Airport revealed that a global technology outage, which caused disruptions worldwide early Friday morning, could lead to flight delays and cancellations throughout the day.

It confirmed that the service outage is causing technical disruptions for some airlines and that travelers should contact their airlines directly for specific flight information.

This issue has led to flight stoppages, halted bank operations, and closed media outlets on Friday, causing massive disruption affecting businesses and services around the globe.

Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport also confirmed that the global outage is disrupting some airlines and that flight delays and cancellations are possible. They requested travelers to contact their airlines directly for information.

Toronto Pearson wrote on X, “We are still seeing issues with major U.S. airlines [Delta, American, United],” as flights continue to arrive and depart from the airport. “So far,”

“Air Canada, Westjet, Sunwing, and Flair operations have not been affected,” along with Porter Airlines. If you are traveling or picking up loved ones this morning, please check your flight status with your airline.

Porter Airlines announced that it has canceled all flights until noon Friday “due to a third-party systems outage affecting global industries.”

According to Porter’s website, “This applies to all areas of our website, mobile app, bookings, flight changes, and inquiry systems… passengers cannot be rebooked while the systems are offline.”

It added, “The rebooking process will take some time, with new flights being confirmed over several days due to high passenger volume.”

Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike stated that the issue believed to be behind the service outage was not a security incident or cyberattack.

The issue affected Microsoft 365 applications and services, with disruptions persisting hours after the tech company announced it was working on fixing them gradually.

Flight tracking service FlightAware indicated that seven flights were canceled and 29 delays concerning WestJet flights today, while Air Canada has seen three cancellations and 19 delays thus far.

University Health Network (UHN), which oversees Princess Margaret, Toronto General, Toronto Rehab, Toronto Western, West Park Healthcare Centre, and Michener Institute of Education, confirmed that the global CrowdStrike outage impacts some of its systems.

UHN wrote on X: “Clinical activity is ongoing as scheduled, but some patients may experience delays.” “Please contact your care team with questions. Thank you for your understanding.”

Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) stated that it is aware of the outage and will monitor the situation.

TTC wrote on X: “There is no immediate impact on our service with critical signaling and safety systems operational.” “If things change, we will inform customers.”

Toronto Police confirmed to CityNews that their operations have not been affected.

A cybersecurity expert indicated that the internet outage will cause real damage with hospitals and other essential services being disrupted.
