Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau acknowledged on Monday that exporting Canadian gas to Germany will not be easy, even if Berlin wants to diversify its supply sources to reduce its dependence on Russia.

In a press conference held in Montreal with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who is visiting Canada, Trudeau downplayed the prospects of exporting liquefied natural gas, pointing to the long distance between the western fields of the country and the Atlantic coast ports.

Trudeau said: "We are studying the possibilities to find out whether it makes sense to export liquefied natural gas, and whether it is feasible to export it directly to Europe."

Scholz confirmed that his country is accelerating the construction of port and gas pipeline infrastructure, aiming to increase its imports of liquefied natural gas, and shows openness to countries like Canada.

Scholz mentioned that Germany wants to put an end to "its dependence on Russian gas supplies."

Canada does not have liquefied natural gas pumping stations on the Atlantic coasts, and it will have to build such facilities in order to export energy to Europe.

It also requires a new gas pipeline to pump it from Alberta in western Canada to the country's east coast, which will translate into higher transportation costs.

For Germany, which heavily relies on Russian gas, energy security is a very important issue since Russia began gradually reducing gas supplies to Europe.

Trudeau and Scholz indicated the possibility of announcing an agreement on hydrogen on Tuesday.

Trudeau said: "We are making progress in a series of investments related to hydrogen, and we are eager to discuss it further on Tuesday."

Scholz explained that Germany is counting on hydrogen to reduce pollution, and confirmed that Canada "will play a very important role in developing green hydrogen in the future."

The two men are scheduled to discuss opportunities for trade cooperation in the automotive and mining sectors, in addition to supporting Ukraine.
