A 25-year-old man was found dead after his car sank in Lake Ontario in Mississauga early Thursday morning.

Peel police received a call around 3 a.m. about a car in the water near Lakefront Promenade and Lakeshore Road East.

The police said its occupants were in the car at the time.

The police added that one of the passengers was able to survive the accident and was taken to the hospital.

Due to poor visibility underwater, the police said work crews were unable to determine if anyone was inside the car and a towing company was called to remove it from the water.

Just before 1 p.m., the police said dive team members were able to successfully remove the car from the water and that a 25-year-old man was deceased inside.

It is unclear how the car ended up in the water, but police commissioner Akil Mooken said the car went into the lake via a boat in the area.

The car was fully submerged when police arrived, and the diver at the scene said he could only see about six inches ahead of him while underwater.

Mooken said the incident is suspicious at this time.

The police are asking anyone with information to contact investigators at 905-453-3311, extension 1233.
