Ford Motor Company announced that the Oakville Electric Vehicle Complex will include the construction of a new electric vehicle factory covering 407,000 square feet.
Ford Motor revealed the details of the plan on Tuesday, stating it will spend an average of $1.8 billion at the Oakville assembly complex to convert it into a center for electric vehicle production.
The automaker also said it will begin retooling the Ontario complex in the second quarter of 2024 and producing electric vehicles in 2025.
It is worth mentioning that General Motors produces electric delivery trucks in Canada, but Ford said this is the first time a full-line automaker has announced plans to produce electric passenger cars in Canada, in the North American market.
The investment was first announced in 2020 amid labor negotiations with the company, where workers sought long-term production commitments, and the three Detroit automakers ultimately agreed to invest in Canadian operations alongside spending agreements with the Ontario government and federal governments.
The announced amounts are just the latest in a wave of electric vehicle spending commitments in Canada. In particular, Volkswagen announced in March that it will build a battery factory in St. Thomas, Ontario.
Ford did not mention the models it intends to build at the complex in the statement.
