The Premier of Ontario, Doug Ford, urged the federal government to cancel or suspend the carbon tax before the planned increase, warning that if they do not, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau may lose the next election.

These comments were made at an unrelated press conference in Milton.

Ford also told reporters on Friday: "The carbon tax is the worst tax ever imposed on a group of people."

He added: “I can’t believe the federal government is actually going to raise the gas tax.”

As of April 1, the tax will increase by $15 per ton.

This is part of the federal government’s plan to increase the cost every year until 2030.

For gasoline, the Ontario government said the federal carbon tax will increase pump costs from about 14.31 cents per liter to about 37.43 cents per liter in 2023.

As of April, the tax in Ontario will be 17.71 cents.
