The university authorities in the state of Florida, in collaboration with the state's governor Ron DeSantis, ordered colleges to shut down a pro-Palestinian student organization, making it the first U.S. state to prohibit a group that supported Hamas's attack on the Zionist entity.

The university authorities in Florida stated that the organization (Students for Justice in Palestine) should be dismantled as part of a campaign in the state led by Republicans against campus demonstrations.

University authorities' advisor Ray Rodriguez wrote in a memo to university leaders, "Based on the support of Students for Justice in Palestine for terrorism and in consultation with Governor DeSantis, these student activities must be canceled."

This has led to tensions between students supporting the occupier and others supporting the Palestinians, resulting in harassment and assaults at American universities since Hamas's attack on October 7 and the Israeli blockade and bombardment of the Gaza Strip.

Administrators at some American universities criticized the student group after it described Hamas's attack as a "historic victory for Palestinian resistance" and called for a "Day of Resistance" on October 12 with demonstrations in its branches at more than 200 colleges in the U.S. and Canada.
