The authorities in Niger announced the deaths of 27 people in the floods caused by heavy rains, affecting more than 70,000 others since last July.
The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs in Niger stated in a statement, "As of August 18, the floods have resulted in the deaths of 27 people and injured 30 others, causing damage to 71,136 people."
It also noted that the regions of Maradi, Zinder, and Tahoua were severely impacted, in addition to the collapse of 6,530 houses in those areas.
So far, the capital Niamey, which is home to two million people and often experiences deadly floods, has survived.
The rainy season in Niger, which occurs between June and September each year, often causes deadly floods in this West African country, most of which is desert, including the arid northern regions.
