Federal security agencies are trying to intensify efforts to track the source of firearms used in crimes, but these efforts are dissipated in the face of judicial decisions that can cancel mandatory firearms tracking.
The federal government says that the police (RCMP) have adopted a new mandatory tracking policy, meaning that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police also play the role of jurisdictional police, i.e., illegal firearms seized will automatically be sent to the National Firearms Tracing Center of the police.
Latest figures indicate that only a small portion of the tens of thousands of firearms seized each year are being tracked.
