The federal government is working with environmental scientists to research the causes of fish deaths in Quebec, specifically in the Saint Lawrence River near Montreal.
The local organization Vigil Verte indicated regarding this matter that water levels in the basin between Montreal
and Brossard have declined and dropped suddenly to their lowest levels in several decades; causing a large number of fish to die and dry up.
Phyllis, director of Vigil Verte, mentioned that when she was inspecting the shore of the Saint Lawrence, she noticed that she was treading on hundreds of dead fish.
Dr. Philippe Bliss, founder of Vigil Verte and a biologist, also stated that this situation is completely abnormal, and reported that many fish were caught in the Laperière basin as well as in other water bodies near this location.
He also pointed out that waste and low oxygen levels may play a role in this matter.
It is noteworthy that the Marine Roads Authority stated that it controls the water levels during the winter non-navigation period for the purpose of infrastructure maintenance.
