A man from Edmonton was convicted of killing his pregnant wife and dumping her body in a pit more than 15 years ago, and was later granted an additional six months of parole.

Michael White, 45, appeared before the Parole Board of Canada earlier this month, in front of a two-member panel.

In the document issued by the board, it says that White – whose parole period was extended from Beaver Creek institution in Gravenhurst, Ontario – now spends four nights a week at his fiancée’s home, but must comply with a number of conditions during his parole period, including participating in counseling to address reintegration stress and healthy relationships.

White was convicted in 2006 of second-degree murder of his wife Liana White and was sentenced to life imprisonment with no chance of parole for 17 years.

For the record, the victim Liana White was four months pregnant with the couple’s second child when she was stabbed to death in July 2005, and her body was found in a pit a few days later.

In its written decision, the Parole Board noted that Michael White has good relations with his daughter and family and some of his wife’s relatives, and said he has been in a romantic relationship since January 2019 and got engaged last December; also, his fiancée has a “full appreciation” of his history.

The board said the upcoming parole period from today would give White more opportunities to stay overnight in the community, which would help the continued development of his relationships.
