This morning, Saturday, the first twenty trucks carrying humanitarian aid arrived in the Gaza Strip through the opening of the Egyptian Rafah crossing for the first time since the outbreak of the war between Israel and Hamas.
Reports from the border indicate that the crossing has been closed again after the trucks passed.
For his part, the UN humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths stated that this first convoy should not be the last.
He added, "I am confident that this delivery will be the beginning of a sustainable effort to provide essential supplies ... to the people of Gaza," and warned that "this first convoy should not be the last."
More than 200 trucks were waiting on the Egyptian side for humanitarian corridors to open and for the Palestinian side of the crossing to be cleared, which was damaged due to Israeli shelling of the crossing.
