Japanese authorities said that an earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale struck areas near Tokyo today, Thursday, but no tsunami warnings were issued, nor were there immediate reports of casualties.
The Japanese news agency Kyodo reported that the Japan Meteorological Agency said the earthquake occurred at about 9:08 AM local time, near Ibaraki Prefecture in eastern Japan at a depth of about 46 kilometers.
The earthquake caused the suspension of the bullet train service that connects Tokyo with the cities of Nagano and Niigata in central Japan.
