Dr. Nikita Kharlov, a gastroenterology specialist, announced that the habit of drinking tea with sweets leads to the development of chronic infectious diseases.

The doctor points out, in a talk with "Sputnik" radio, that drinking tea with sweets and pastries is a common habit, although it may stimulate the onset of serious diseases because we do not "feed" ourselves alone.

He says, "Sweets are not only consumed by humans but also by the bacteria present in the intestines. That is, we feed the bacteria an excess amount of carbohydrates, which over time can develop into chronic infections and slowly destroy the immune system, which helps the occurrence of other different diseases, such as chronic tonsillitis or bacterial overgrowth syndrome that many suffer from nowadays."

He adds that the carbohydrates found in sweets cause an increase in insulin levels in the blood, which may lead to weight gain, obesity, and the development of type 2 diabetes.

He says, "If a person consumes a large amount of sweets with tea, they will suffer from excess weight and obesity in the future. Excess carbohydrates cause elevated insulin levels in the body, which prevents the release of fats from the cells. If the insulin level is high, a person cannot burn fat. It also leads to a decrease in cell sensitivity to insulin, which ultimately increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes."

The doctor points out that constant consumption of sweets affects taste receptors.

He says, "The brain gets used to the preferred taste, and other tastes seem unappealing. Therefore, it takes weeks or months for the taste receptors to get rid of the sweet taste they are used to and return to normal."
