The drug "Paxlovid" (Paxlovid) is available in Canadian pharmacies. However, only a small number of patients are allowed to take it because the prescribing criteria are very restrictive.
This drug is used as a treatment to reduce the symptoms of COVID-19 and to prevent the novel coronavirus.
Provinces have distributed less than 15% of the Paxlovid supplies they received from the federal government since the Ministry of Health gave the green light to use it last January.
"Paxlovid is a great treatment," according to Dr. Zein Shagla, an infectious disease specialist in Ontario.
"Unfortunately, among the people hospitalized due to coronavirus, there are definitely some who were unable to access it."
