The Newfoundland Health Authority said on Wednesday that it is reviewing about 3,000 mammograms from the past three years for potential issues after officials discovered that some images had been analyzed using incorrect monitors.
Andrée Robichaud, President and CEO of Central Health, said the mammograms are under review, covering the period between November 1, 2019, and August 19, 2022, and added that preliminary reviews of mammograms from 468 patients showed that three had potential discrepancies.
National standards also call for mammogram images to be assessed on 5-megapixel monitors, but Central Health officials said they learned last week that some had been viewed on 3-megapixel monitors. Dr. Mark Spurrell, Acting Chief of Staff for Central Health, said these monitors meet current guidelines for images like CT scans but not for mammograms. Spurrell told reporters, "I want to assure everyone that 5-megapixel monitors are now being used throughout the region to review mammograms."
Dr. Angela Pickles, head of the Medical Imaging Department at the Eastern Health Authority of the province, said the three discrepancies discovered so far fall within the expected margin of error and that it is impossible to know whether they originated due to the monitors or due to different interpretations of mammograms.
