A Canadian-born commander of the so-called Norman Brigade – a volunteer combat group in Ukraine – has died.
The news was first circulated through social media posts and later shared by the Russian state-owned outlet Sputnik.
Jean-François Ratel, 36 years old, was also known by the call sign "Hrolf."
Global Affairs Canada said it was aware of the death of a Canadian in Ukraine but did not name him or provide the cause of death.
Government spokesperson Grantley Franklin wrote: "Our hearts are with his family and loved ones during this very difficult time." "Consular officials are in contact with local authorities for more information and are providing consular assistance to the family."
