Prince Edward Island reported at least one death following a historic storm that plunged thousands into darkness and caused severe damage across the island. During a live press conference on Sunday, the province said that while the cause of the person's death has not yet been determined, an initial investigation suggests that generator issues may have played a role. No further details about the person have been released at this time.

Nearly 36 hours after Tropical Storm Fiona made landfall in the Maritimes, 95 percent of customers on Prince Edward Island remained without power. Premier Dennis King noted that more than 50 transportation crew members were out inspecting the damage early Sunday morning. Additionally, General Electric is using helicopters to conduct aerial assessments. King said: "Preliminary assessments, generally, indicate that our road infrastructure may be a little better than we initially thought, but there is severe damage throughout Prince Edward Island."

There are currently six roads completely closed on the island, as well as several other bridges that remain "completely impassable." In addition to what King described as "significant damage" to at least six schools across the province. King told reporters that ministers are working on emergency plans for the affected schools. Meanwhile, schools across the island will be closed Monday and Tuesday, with another update expected Tuesday morning.

On Saturday, the provincial government sent a request to the federal government for assistance in recovery and cleanup. Moments before the press conference, King said he had received confirmation that more than 100 military personnel would arrive later Sunday night, hoping to assist crews on the ground by Monday morning. Regarding gas availability, King noted that the island has fuel, but power issues at the tank farm in Charlottetown delayed fuel distribution to community gas stations. King said the regional cabinet meets several times a day, having established three ministerial committees to address economic concerns, infrastructure and recovery, and social support for island residents.

Meanwhile, more than 30 reception centers have opened across the province where residents can go for food, rest, or a place to charge electronic devices. Additionally, temporary shelter services will be extended until at least Tuesday. According to King, the province is in the early stages of establishing an emergency financial assistance program.
