The official Turkish station "TRT Haber" announced today, Wednesday, September 6, 2023, that at least five people were killed due to heavy rain that turned into floods and torrents in northwest Turkey.
Local media indicated that three people were killed and three went missing in Kırklareli near the borders with Bulgaria and Greece after floodwaters submerged homes in the area late last night, Tuesday.
The authorities also stated that two were killed and 31 injured in two neighborhoods in Istanbul, the country’s largest city.
Video footage showed massive amounts of water flowing, causing cars to float in several areas north of Istanbul.
Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya stated that search and rescue operations are ongoing and he pledged financial support for families in the affected areas.
The Istanbul Governor's Office mentioned in a statement that the amount of rain that fell on the city in less than six hours is equivalent to what is usually expected throughout the month of September.
