A new study has revealed a strong association between COVID-19 and acute kidney disorders, including acute kidney injury (AKI), which varies over time, according to Russia Today.

The study, led by Dr. Li Chunyang and Dr. Zeng Xiaoxi from the West China Medical Biobank, was recently published in the journal Health Data Science.

The team used data from the UK Biobank to explore both the association and potential causality between COVID-19 and acute kidney disorders, involving 10,121 COVID-19 patients, matching their data with a control group of 29,004 participants based on age, sex, deprivation index, and hospitalization status.

The findings indicated that the risk of developing acute kidney disorders peaked during the second week after infection and decreased by the fourth week, with the study finding that patients with moderate to severe "COVID-19" showed a significantly higher risk of acute deterioration in kidney function.

An analysis of a single sample showed a potential short-term causal effect of COVID-19 on the risk of developing acute kidney disorders, primarily restricted to the first week after infection.

The results suggest that healthcare providers should closely monitor kidney function in COVID-19 patients, especially those experiencing moderate to severe conditions, during the critical first few weeks after infection.
