Manchester City achieved a valuable victory over Liverpool in the English Football League Cup, regaining their momentum after a long break imposed by the World Cup tournament, achieving a 3-2 result on Thursday evening, December 22, 2022, in the round of 16 of this tournament.
Manchester City, during their match hosted at their stadium, the "Etihad" Stadium, achieved a morale boost for the team against their rival who was crowned the champion of the tournament last season, achieving the possibility to resume their journey defending their Premier League title, which resumes next midweek, hoping to win the title they had monopolized for four consecutive seasons before Liverpool won it last season.
Matches between Manchester City and Liverpool have become one of the most important confrontations on the European and global scenes in recent years. The team proved to their fans their retention of fitness despite the previous break during the World Cup, where more than one player appeared at good levels, foremost among them the young Norwegian Erling Haaland who continued with the team his outstanding scoring record in his first season at the Etihad Stadium, in addition to the Belgian Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez, and their performance reassured the Spanish coach Josep Guardiola, Manchester City's head coach.
Liverpool and the team's coach, the German Jurgen Klopp, also demonstrated the readiness and preparation of his players, foremost among them the Egyptian Mohamed Salah, who managed to score one of the team's goals during the match.
Thus, the Manchester City team has taken a step on the path to reclaiming the cup title, qualifying for the quarter-finals, for the 5th time in the 7 seasons they have competed in the tournament under Guardiola's leadership, achieving the title four times, which fills the team with great optimism ahead of the match against Southampton in the quarter-finals.
If Manchester City wins the title this season, their total titles in the tournament will rise to 9, sharing the top spot with Liverpool as the most successful teams in the history of this tournament.
