Chrysler, owned by Stellantis, is recalling more than 17,000 SUVs in Canada and over 211,000 SUVs and pickup trucks in the United States due to a software malfunction that may disable the electronic control systems of the vehicles.

The recall covers certain models of the 2022 Dodge Durango, Ram 2500, and Ram 3500.

According to documents published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, these vehicles may experience a malfunction in the anti-lock brake control unit, which could result in a failure of stability control, a key safety feature, and an increased risk of a collision as a result.

As a remedy, the company will work to update the anti-lock brake control unit software for free, with notification letters scheduled to be sent to dealers and owners by mail on July 26, according to NHTSA.

A spokesperson for Stellantis noted that a "routine review of customer feedback" led to an investigation which discovered that the software issue affects certain vehicles.

The spokesperson added that Chrysler is not currently aware of any injuries or accidents related to the issue, but it "urges customers to follow the instructions in their recall notifications."

Chrysler, based in Auburn Hills, Michigan, expects this defect to affect a total of 211,581 vehicles - produced during specific periods between April 2021 and December 2022 - in the United States, including 524 Ram 3500, 157,890 Ram 2500, and 53,167 Dodge Durango according to the company's report.

Drivers can confirm whether their specific vehicle is included in this recall and find more information using the NHSTA website.
