Chief Justice welcomes Michelle O'Bonsawin to the Supreme Court of Canada

The Chief Justice of Canada welcomes the appointment of the first Indigenous member to the Supreme Court of Canada.

In a statement issued today, Richard Wagner said that Michelle O'Bonsawin has proven to be authentic and hardworking throughout her career as a lawyer and judge.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau nominated O'Bonsawin earlier this month and confirmed her appointment to the Supreme Court effective September 1.

Wagner will swear her in on the same day at a private ceremony at the Supreme Court. An official welcome ceremony will be held in November.
