Prime Minister Justin Trudeau signed a new security agreement with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky today, Saturday, as world leaders gathered to commemorate the second anniversary of Russia's 2022 invasion.

The agreement, announced by Trudeau during a surprise visit to Kyiv, aims to bolster the Ukrainian military and the country's struggling economy.

The agreement includes approximately $320 million in new military spending, which is scheduled to be managed by the end of the year, and $2.4 billion in loans to Ukraine, through the International Monetary Fund.

Trudeau said about the loans at a press conference at the official residence of the Ukrainian president: "The war is not only for those experienced on the battlefield, but ordinary people live it every day. This money allows for the repair of roads that have been blown up, to pay nurses and doctors who keep people healthy, and supports Ukrainians as they fight against Russia."

Trudeau also announced $75 million to help fund efforts in the country and intelligence gathering.

The Prime Minister is spending today in the Ukrainian capital alongside leaders of the European Commission, Italy, and Belgium, and absent countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Poland indicated the matter through public statements on social media.

This is part of a global campaign to display a politically significant show of international solidarity with Ukraine in the face of a bloody conflict said to have no end in sight.

Trudeau said in prepared remarks: "There will also be ongoing support, over several years, because we are here for the long term to help Ukraine decisively defeat Putin’s unjustified invasion."

The Prime Minister also pledged $15 million to help complete the Ukrainian National Holodomor Memorial Museum in Kyiv.
