Russian President Putin receives another blow, as Canada has decided to impose a ban on importing oil products from Russia. In this regard, the Canadian government stated on its website that “it is prohibited for any person in Canada and any Canadian outside Canada to import, purchase, or obtain a number of petroleum products from Russia or from any person in Russia.”
The government added that this decision comes as part of anti-Russian sanctions, especially regarding new amendments to the economic measures taken against this country due to the invasion of Ukraine.
The Canadian government confirmed that it has added the Russian Ministry of Defense, the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, and 29 other companies from the Russian defense complex to its sanctions lists.
This decision comes days after U.S. President Joe Biden announced a ban on oil imports from Russia in the toughest measure his administration has taken so far to punish Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine.
Biden said the ban decision was made “in close coordination” with U.S. allies, affirming that his country “will not contribute to supporting Putin’s war.”
For his part, British Business and Energy Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng announced that his country will also stop importing Russian crude oil and petroleum products by the end of 2022.
Meanwhile, Europe currently refuses to impose a ban on Russian imports, which provide 40% of its natural gas needs and 30% of its oil.
