Ottawa contributed millions of dollars as part of a renegotiated deal that is expected to have Canada pay more than previously agreed to develop the F-35 compared to previous years.

The $99 million deal and the renegotiated agreement come despite the fact that the Liberal government said Canada may not actually purchase the stealth fighter.

The government announced in late March that it was entering negotiations to purchase 88 F-35 aircraft, but left the door open to purchasing a Swedish-made fighter if talks broke down.

Canada is one of eight partner countries involved in developing the F-35, and its latest contribution means it has paid a total of $712 million so far.

Defense officials say the updated deal reflects Canada’s desire to buy 88 new fighters instead of its original plan for 65 fighters, as well as Turkey’s withdrawal from the F-35 program.

The renegotiated agreement also comes as U.S. officials raised new concerns last week about rising costs and development problems with the stealth fighter.
